As one way of taking part in the afforestation drive, United Civil Servants SACCO has launched it’s green initiative. The initiative is aimed at planting 2 million trees by the year 2028.
Speaking during the tree planting exercise at Chibwaka in Viphya plantations, guest of honour at the event, Councillor Manson Waya who represented mayor for Mzuzu city council commended United Civil Servants SACCO for the initiative saying it will assist in mitigating effects of climate change and bring back the lost glory of Chikangawa forest.
“We are impressed to note that apart from changing people’s lives through financial services, United Civil Servants SACCO is also mindful of the environment.” Said Councillor Waya.

United Civil Servants SACCO plans to plant 280,000 trees during the 2024-2025 tree planting season.
“Currently the country’s forest loss is estimated at 1.8 percent, representing 42,000 hectares of land. This is alarming and we decided to embark on this community service activity to complement government’s efforts in achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 13 which emphasizes on Climate action. The launch of our green initiative also aligns with this year’s National Forestry Season theme which says; Restore forests and land to secure food.” said Francis Waliwa, Chief Executive Officer for United Civil Servants SACCO.
Waliwa added that the project will involve students from primary and secondary schools across the country to instil the culture of caring for the environment and planting trees.
